3 Ways To Prepare Your Roof For Hurricanes

Jason Hunt

When it comes to natural disasters, hurricanes can be some of the harshest. Hurricanes are hard on your entire home, but particularly your roof. If you have broken shingles, the wrong roofing materials, or have a rood in need of repairs, you are putting your home at a greater risk of damage. Here are some ways to prepare your roof for hurricane season.

Install a Metal Roof

One of the first things you should do is install the right roofing material. There are many types of roofs to choose from, from concrete tiles to asphalt shingles. While these are good for some people, they are not ideal if you live somewhere that is at risk of hurricanes. The best type of roof is one that is made of metal. Metal roofs are ideal for natural disasters like hurricanes, as they can provide a barrier for extreme winds, rain, and other perils, such as fire and freezing.

You have different types of metals to choose from when choosing your roof, such as aluminum, copper, zinc, steel, stainless steel, and titanium. Your budget and the look you want will determine which one is best. Aluminum is one of the least expensive, but won't hold up as well as one made of steel.

Reinforce the Roof

Reinforcing a roof is necessary if it has been a while since you had your roof repaired or installed. If you just had your brand new metal roof installed, this is probably not necessary. However, if it has been a year or so since you had it inspected, now is the time to do it. A roofing contractor will start by looking at your roofing materials and determining if any repairs need to be made. They will look at its integrity and let you know if they think it could hold up to a hurricane. If not, some reinforcement may be necessary. One way to do this is by getting two-by-fours or other sturdy materials to overlap over the top of your roof. This provides an extra layer of protection.

Get Hurricane Straps

The last thing you can do to prepare your roof for a hurricane is getting hurricane straps. These are made of galvanized metal and can attach to any type of roof you have. Even if you were not able to install a metal roof, these straps can help provide extra protection and keep your roof intact if there is a hurricane. The hurricane straps help to hold the roof in place and keep it attached to the walls of your home. While you may have some damage to the top of your roof, it won't detach from your home and damage it, or damage other homes nearby if it flies off.
